i know it may be a bit over-run by tourists and teenage backpackers lately, and while a lot of them CAN be rude or inappropriate, Vang Vieng is still an incredible place to visit and worth a stopover (however brief you like) while traveling SE Asia

@freakyhair666 WAAAY too many. That's pretty much all there is, and the ones who stay and run a bar and are rude to everybody.

Hey, check out the song I wrote about this awesome place!

A formerly beautiful spot where tourism shows it's two faces income for the locals and direspectful bakpacker trash.

@panthercar425 True! I was there in July 2009. Destroyed by drunk Westerners and poor backpackers.

@panthercar425 you took the words right from me mate, this place is now ruined by disrespectful tourists who converted it into a commercial drunk hole in the lonely planet guide. Beautiful scenery but much nicer places to go for real authenticity and culture.!!!!
Vang Vien has changed tremendously in the last 8-10 years. When I was was there in 1999 it was very quiet - one bar that closed at 8:00pm when lights went out. Now it is trying to be a party town. It is gorgeous, but if you go - show respect and don't just go to Vang Vien to party - too many lame tourists ruin too many places. Be cool :)
