英文雜談: Why English is so damn hard - 字彙

英文讀音難學，字彙更難學。同一事物，英文往往有數十種不同的表達方法，而每個字在用法和語氣上都有細微的分別。像 "思想" Think，意思近似的字就有數十個，像 ponder，contemplate，deliberate，meditate 等等。要在適當時候用到適當的字，一點也不容易。

學英文時大家有沒有想過：為甚麼? 為甚麼英文會有這麼多不同的字彙? 為甚麼護膚品包裝上寫的是 "Dermatologically approved" 而非 "Skin doctors say it's okay to use"? 為甚麼打電話跟女朋友約會，說的是 "Can I see you tonight?" 而非 "I request the pleasure of your company tonight"?

今次我不談讀音用字，就和大家講一講故。

廣闊的詞海使英文難學，卻同時帶出無窮的表達能力。這也是我愛英文的原因。

@harrylcy118 네, 나는 일본(日本) 사람이라고 합니다. Do you live in 台湾 or 香港? Is your mother language Cantonese(広東語)? We Japanese had used complicated forms of 漢字 until the late 1940s as you do today. To visit China someday, I just started learning Chinese(北京語), but found the pronanciation very difficult! I will do my best though I'm not sure I can master the language.
