It seems like KT eased the potato plants up. In most hacks, they're set to hurt the instant they appear, which is like one pixel. It seems he gave it a couple frames of leeway. In SMB3, they're passable up until they're completely out of the pipe.
Also with that floaty platform in lava, I have lots of experience with those. They're safe unless you jump on it when it's already lowered some. It makes it sink too far. Basically just jump and let it rise first before jumping again.
