I was actually an extra in the scene. It took two days to shoot, we had to film it over and over and over again. The crowd moved around the mall, and the images were later spliced together to to make it look like one large crowd. It was cold as hell those few days of shooting, and that was the last time I was an "extra" in any movie.

@Konform2zoidberg ...actually I think this might be the ONLY major film to ever acknowledg the GI movement, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, or the simple reality of heroic un-psychotic veterans opposing the war and not necessarily hating peace protestors.
So...thank you Robert Zemeckis, for this and Back to the Future.

@Konform2zoidberg you're right.

@USSCannonFodder That's what war is really like. It's a shame he was muted right when saying that.

Tom Hanks commented that it went something like:
"Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
When Forrest gets up to talk at the Vietnam rally in Washington, the microphone plug is pulled and you cannot hear him. According to Tom Hanks, he says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that." I found it!!!! in imdb trivia
