Mark Gorton takes a visit to a corner of Herald Square that becomes choked with people during rush hours. He posits that we can better use our space if we take away space devoted for cars and re=purposed it for people.
@Stelten Because then you would have less traffic that moves faster. Which is even more dangerous for pedestrians. Solution is to make the roads narrower and sidewalkers wider. Or make some streets pedestrian plazas.
@HBNewYork1 The point is not that crowds are bad, it's that they should be given more space. I don't think Mark Gorton would begrudge the crowd of people at all - he loves large crowds. He just wants them to be safe and have more space to enjoy the city on foot... You might be interested to read some books by Jan Gehl if you want to learn more about what Mark is talking about here.
I don't see a problem with huge crowds, that what makes a NYC a live city. I have seen huge cities and nobody is walking around , it 's like a cemetery, take for instance Albany, Syracuse, etc,,, they are big cities but no crowds. All what u see are cars. I don't know, that makes them look boring.

Why not just introdicing a road toll for downtown areas?
Pro: More money for cities, less cars in the downtown are.
