Spyro beats Gaul, but the Ape King is still up to fight. When the two fighters plummet below the floor, the Lunar Alignment activates and Spyro accidentally turned into a creature of darkness.

i think since Spyro and Malefor share so much and the fact Spyro was in the beam that's gonna free Malefor, Spyro was possessed by Malefor for the fight with Gaul. He was in control when fighting, but that awesome fury attack may have done the trick
