There are thousands of acres of lands & shoreline lost each and every year along the southbasin of Lake Winnipeg as a result of artificial high water levels required for the operation of the Lake Winnipeg Regulation Project, a key component of Manitoba Hydro's Integrated Power System. The impact and affects from shoreline erosion on the southbasin has never been fully studied, Manitoba Government or Hydro have yet to accept responsibility. The Government is not prepared to order a full & comprehensive Environmental Audit. A review of shoreline erosion, impacts and affects on the water, water quality, aquatic and wildlife and on a population that continue to rely on Lake Winnipeg for sustenance as it has for centuries.
The flooding and shoreline erosion around the Southbasin has costs $M of dollars in financial losses to personal, property and property values, business revenue (most particularly Tourism 2007 = $160M) and ability to develop and plan land use and community development in to the future.
