In MY NEIGHBORHOOD!!!!!!!

ALLEGEDLY!!

(Thursday, January 3, 2008 @ approximately 8:00 PM) Several Gwinnett County Police officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant last night at White Cedars Terrace in Buford, which is an area of Gwinnett County. Two police officers were shot when the suspect opened fire on the officers.

The surrounding residences were evacuated for public and officer safety. A perimeter was established and Suwanee Dam Road was closed between Whitehead Road and Saltcreek Point. This morning, a nearby elementary school was closed due to the potentially dangerous activity. Again, this was to ensure the public was not at risk.

The suspect remained armed in the home as SWAT officers responded to the location. Several attempts to verbally negotiate with the suspect proved futile after seven hours. SWAT continued to use "tear" gas to flush the suspect out of the home. SWAT officers then attempted entry into the home, but were met with gunfire by the suspect. No officers were injured in that encounter. SWAT officers retreated from the home. After another strategic plan was developed by SWAT command officials, the tactical entry team entered the home again around 10:30 AM. Officers found the suspect deceased. It has been determined by the Medical Examiner's Office that the manner of death was suicide. His cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head

The officers who were shot are currently in stable condition at Gwinnett Medical Center. The officer who required surgery is a twenty-two year veteran of the department and has served on numerous specialized units during his tenure. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit, but his condition has been stabilized.

The second officer is in stable condition and suffered non-life threatening injuries. He is a seven year veteran with the police department, but has also had previous law enforcement experience in Pennsylvania before moving to Georgia several years ago.

There were numerous other law enforcement agencies from the metro area that offered their assistance. On behalf of the Gwinnett County Police Department, we thank you for your support.
