Let us face it: we Filipinos love music. We bring our music wherever we go. Music books, tapes, VCDs, MP3s, and other portable media. The most amazing music machine I saw is the Karaoke jukebox. It has about 20,000 songs, it has an analog 25 monitor for displaying the lyrics, powerful speakers, microphones and an option to charge money per song or not. I still have to see one here in Toronto.
Many Filipinas are making money singing for night clubs here in Canada. Several of our countrymen are also gifted with the talent to play an instrument.
My family is not into music or singing. I am the odd ball. Instead of joining the family chat, I prefer to listen to the radio for the no. 1 hits. That was during the 50s. Listened to all of them. Memorized their lyrics. I still know many of them up to now.
I learned hw to play the piano by going to several houseowners in Asingan who have the instrument. The nearest place to practice for me was the Asingan Independent Church or the Aglipayan church which is just the next door. The priest then was Fr. Castaneda, from Alcala. When he died, his family moved back to Alcala bringing everything, including their piano.
I had to look for other places. Where there is a will, there is a way. And I found the way, right here in my innermost will to master this fine musical instrument.---#
