The only Elliot Smith show I ever saw. This is all I have. Waltz #2. I was backstage with the Mark Lanegan band, who also performed that night. I heard his voice and was captivated by it's presence in such a huge space, rushed out to catch this song. Such exquisite songwriting, and so very tragic how he ended his life. Here is this beautiful take on a beautiful song and I am grateful for it. Stepping out of the shadows, and back in again.

I met him briefly in his backstage lair. My daughter was a huge fan. He gave me an autograph for her. A man of few words in person. Later that night Ben and Mike and I were at a nearby piano bar, he was in the room at the bar drinking whiskey, alone. I asked if we should invite him over, they said no. He was just that way.

  • A very good song, written by no doubt a very talented songwriter. I used to write and sing songs and I know how hard it is to put a melody together that fits with the words you want to say. Smith was great. Too bad he couldn't hold it together for longer.

  • Yes.

  • I love this video, there's something oneiric on it, the echo and the way Elliott almost disappears in the dark is kind of celestial. Very nice, touching. Love it.

  • Yes. You say it well! Thanks.

  • I cried watching this. I cried really hard cause i wish I had been where you were to experience being there to watch the master at his craft. He truly was a beautiful inside as well as out. I miss him despite the fact that I was so young when he passed away. Thank you for this.

  • A true artist. A man who has transformed his life, his suffering, his emotions into something more. In something eternal, in a universal language, a universal feeling that goes beyond himself. In a sweet and melodious music. Thanks for your story, will remain forever in my heart.
