  • Sold in 1972 to become WWWE (3WE) and the format changed to MOR. The FM counterpart was renamed WWWM (M105).

  • NBC didn't learn there lesson from the extortion they pulled on Westinghouse, as they would screw Conan O'Brien out of the Tonight Show in favor of chinboy Leno 54 years later. The FCC should order that reversed too. Then again, Conan's better off without them and is doing great on TBS.

  • It's interesting how Jay Lawrence does jokes about General David Sarnoff, Jack paar, David Susskind (a top TV producer of the era), Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Merv Griffin, Regis Philbin (whose Westinghouse-syndicated talk show was replaced by Griffin), and Hugh Downs, all of whom had links to NBC or Group W/Westinghouse.

BTW, WKYC was the first NBC-owned radio station to become a straight-ahead mainstream top-40 rocker, due in large part to the fact Group W had success with that format.

  • Another great piece of American history. Very cool. Thanks for sharin' this Tim!
