Even if not intended as racist, the fact that he's stupid enough not to realize how that statement would be construed is enough to say this guy should never have been elected...even forgetting all of his other antics.

WOW...talk about taking something, someone says, completely out of context! I think it's clear that what was said was in no way racist. It has only been INTERPRETED that way. There is no way that anyone can be absolutely sure that what was said here was meant to be anything to take offense to. And since you can't be sure about the intended meaning of the words then it makes no sense to judge them. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Has no one here ever been misinterpreted before...come on!

I listened to the whole recording, and got the whole context. I also put the link to the recording in the video.
The context is clear. They were talking about a metaphorical human baby. Other Senators described it as ugly. Buttars used "black" and "dark" as synonyms of ugly.
There is no contextual ambiguity. This guy says desegregation was wrong and yesterday added that he didn't understand how lynching had anything to do with racism.
He shouldn't represent Utah.

I've lived in Utah for many years. Buttars is the most flagrant proof of inbreeding and intolerance I've seen since "Big Ears" Kimball ran the mor(m)on church. So long as Utahns vote such idiots into office, Utah remains the asshole of America.

That's some rich irony.
What we learn from leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King is that the way to fight intolerance is by giving a firm example of respect and Christian Love.
Mcnarie, you seem to be cut from the same cloth as Senator Buttars, the difference being that I don't have to count you as part of my government (I hope.)
