Aloha, My Name is Evelyn Obamos and this is my story:
• I am a full Filipino born and raised on the island of Guam, moved to hawaii in 2004 and I now currently reside as a student at the University of San Francisco. As a senior in the 5 year Master Program for Dual Degree Teacher Preparation im finishing up two majors in Media Studies and Education with Philippine Studies and Music minors.
• In addition to being a full-time student, I am a University Ambassador, an intern at the Intercultural center, and I have an off-campus job in the University Relations office at the nationally distinguished UCSF.
• As a second generation Filipino-American, I consider myself very fortunate to be able to attend a University in the heart of San Francisco on a full ride.
• As a Bill Gates Millennium Scholar, it has been my privilege to represent my Asian American culture through the financial assistance of the Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Foundation.
• Because the bay has a prevalent API community, i have volunteered at the pioneer city for the Asian American Film Festival and share my talents with communities throughout the Bay Area. Despite size of the events, It has truly been my value to send a positive message through music, education and leadership development.
• Despite being a student and knowing that there is more room for growth with learning, I have always encouraged the cultural awareness of the API community. From being heavily involved with the Filipino American organization, USF Kasamahan, co-founding and reviving the Asian Pacific American Student Coalition, to transforming the Culturally Focused Clubs Council in my second term as president. This past year I was also the event coordinator for Asian Pacific Islander Graduation Ceremony that invited and had the first Chinese-American Senator Leland Yee, as the keynote speaker.
• Along with these resume-bedazzling items, there have been many learning experiences beyond my college campus that have broadened my thinking. Whether I was volunteering with bilingual students at the Filipino Education Center, rallying with the Filipino veterans for full equity around City Hall, or attending a workshop that shed light on the numbers of human trafficking victims, it was always an internal craving to learn about these issues, share them, and be a part of a proactive alliance.
• As a strong advocate for empowerment and solidarity, i believe it is important that the generations of tomorrow not forget our histories and struggles. That said, I end this video with a quick song entitled, Have you gotten ching-chonged?
