The day after I got my car licence I celebrated with a small journey down towards the south-west end of Sydney. That morning I was very lucky to be slowed down by a Bankstown truck, which conveniently got me travelling on Newbridge Rd near Liverpool at the same time as this old green front loader.

I remember cruising along while listening to the radio and then I spotted the tailgate of a garbage truck up in the distance. As I got closer I tried to ID the truck, closing up on the fact that it was a front loader, but finding it hard to accept that it was the type I was thinking about. I stuck behind this truck the rest of the short journey to Liverpool and as it turned a corner it was confirmed that I was driving behind an old MacDonald Johnston MNL.

Totally bewildered having just found a truck I thought was extinct in Sydney, I continued to tag along behind the rare truck for about 15 minutes until he reached the next job. I pulled in right behind the truck and started to shoot a distant clip from the car. However, the driver got out of the truck to move something, so I used the opportunity to have a quick chat with him about videoing, etc which was when I ended up with the closer shot.

I spent the next hour or so following this champion driver through another couple of areas near Liverpool to get as much footage as I could of his truck. I managed to get another few jobs on film and then he was headed for the tip, but I ended up with some awesome shots of this old beast at work. I was also very interested to find out the company was Anderson Waste who I thought only operated in the southern highlands around Wollondilly.
