A favorite in 1972. A favorite in 2012. Thank you, Danny O'Keefe, for a song that has been with me all these years.
-
GREAT then, GREAT now!

@jasonptify It is a beautiful song, and you are right, it's from 1972. I was there to hear on the radion, when it made the Top Ten.

A long time ago in a faraway place.... Had a friend back then named Charlie, and I'd swear this song was written for him.
-
Thank you for posting this original artist song.

These lyrics are incredible!!! I don't understand how I never heard this song until 3 months ago, now I will never forget it!

In the midst of a Montana snowstorm the music makes things right. Just glad my "power" is still on...

@Pharenheitz Hell. I was just akid, not a F'n care in the world, , now 2 teenage boys, all the debt and responsiblility is worth it, but that song takes me back to simpler place in time
-
@scottymacIII Yeah, I think I remember that too.
I also remember sitting up late on snow blizzard nights, when you couldn't walk out the door for nothing, and my mother introducing me to this song. This and the whole album will remind me of being an unemployed-twenty-year-old in a small town.
-
@Pharenheitz Not at all, I think we all remember where were in life when this was a hit, , We lived in Dallas at the time, my dad took us to pizza place called shotgun Sams and there was always some dude playing acoustic sets, and this song was a staple
-
Always liked this one. Should have known a guy in a coonskin cap could not last in pop.
-
Even though I know no one here, nor do I wish to ever, I deeply believe there is a spiritual connection between us all for just appreciating this music. I mean that... I am crazy.

it's hollywood in a nutshell. says it all. I didn't play around. I survived. o'keefe is one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

This tune is carefully produced with nuanced backup vocals and carefully placed keyboard, organ, slide guitar and, of course, harmonica tracks. I was glad to hear O'Keefe is still around making music. I bought this album in the '70s and saw him live at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco around 1977. He was generous with his stage and his talent and gave me some of my most memorable 70s memories. Thanks Danny.

You play around you lose your wife
You play too long
You lose your life..
Sounds ominous..

Ahhhhhhh ......................

Addictive meloncholy. This tune was recorded several times before the "hit" version made it. There were covers even before he had this hit. I think the Bards out of the NW did it.
Strictly speaking, this isn't the ORIGINAL original version. O'Keefe had first recorded this song in 1971 his debut album ("Danny O'Keefe", on Cotillion Records). This version, though indeed the hit, was actually a re-recording made a year later for his second album ("O'Keefe", on Atlantic Records).
