I think the irony of it is that the only person who actually hears his tape is deaf. That is the person he had the true connection with in the film. But really no one hears his tape at all.

I totally fell in love with this movie at first sight. It's so sweet, yet so sad... <3 :(.. Poor guy.. but Christian Slater is an awesome actor, he did well!

I dont know but look closely as she listens... she is actually holding the tape recorder and pressing it against her chest...
I think she can just interpret that he is there through the vibrations of the recorder and not actually hearing him talk. that way she could only feel his presence
dumb theory of mine XD but i would still be very proud if that was the case lol

I think Lucy was also hiding something. She clearly can hear and possibly speak. Totally was not expecting it to end that way. Movie reminds me of Edward Hopper paintings.

completely agree... she is a fabuluos actress... and I bet shes an absolute fabulous person too
but my question was because after they took him away she held the tape recorder and kept listening to it and crying! so I still have my doubts lol

I cant believe that wikipedia had misinterpreted this movie saying that he wanted to kill himself in the first place.
he was just going to the beach for the first time in his life and they forced the suicide thingy into his brain.
one other thing... is the character of cherry jones really deaf??

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I think Julian may have been thinking about killing himself, but he certainly didn't seem to want to die, did he?
In the movie Lucy is deaf and mute. However, the actress that plays her, Cherry Jones, is not. However she was very convincing. Fabulous acting performance.
