This video gives a demonstration of how to compile a current GNU Emacs (Emacs.app) under Mac OS X Snow Leopard on a three year old MacBook. It takes less than ten minutes. You have to install Apple developer tools beforehand. Having compiled it, you may move Emacs.app to any directory you like.
Any extensions that are not part of the GNU Emacs distribution available from http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/ have to be installed separately, e.g. AUCTeX for editing TeX-related files you have to obtain from http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/download.html and compile separately.
