Darwin is kind of incorrect about the 'either or' principle applying all through genetics. There are many phenotypes that are distinctive from the parents asa result of the products of the different alleles interacting and functioning in a different way to how the gene products do in the parents. The proteins might catalyse a biochemical pathway in a slightly different way resulting in the resulting molecule having distinct properties that differ from the mothers and fathers respective molecule
