Dr. Giovannini discusses neurofibromatosis type II, aka "NF2," and the research underway in his lab at the non-profit House Ear Insitute. The lab is studying the nature of this life-threatening genetic disease with the goal of developing better treatment options for NF2. NF2 produces bilateral tumors on the vestibular nerves that lead to the brain. House Ear Institute is a world leader on the study and treatment of NF2. Current treatment options include surgery that usually requires severing the hearing nerve. Patients who lose their hearing can have their hearing partially restored with an auditory brainstem implant (ABI).
