The Sagana Women Fishing Farming project is a community-based conservation project on Kenya world heritage site intended to protect the forest resources of Mt. Kenya by changing the lifestyle of women groups and their families and to provide them with an alternative source of income and protein. Mt. Kenya faces considerable environmental degradation due to over exploration of resources, expanding agriculture land and pollution of the land and river water as a result of lack of proper sanitarion and dispose of wasted facility.

The object of the project is to engage local farmers to conservation work. GEF SGP provided financial, technical and monitoring assistance. Majority of the contributions were used to build fish ponds and labor cost during the construction. Training sessions were provided to teach farmers how farm fish and how to market it. This is an income generating project. The fish farming is expected to raise profits at Ksh 500,000 to 1,000,000 each year after deduction of costs and taxes. The project improved three existing fish ponds and constructed an additional seven ponds, each holding approximately 3,000 fingerlings. These improvements raised the annual production of fish from 600 to over 12,000 and provided the women's group managing the project with a source of alternative income and provided the larger community with another source of protein. The Sagana Fish and Beekeeping Women's Group has also planted some 4,000 indigenous trees in the forest
