Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, news in Greek 3/11/07 (www.cybc.com.cy)

The Cypriot community in Britain yesterday staged a massive demonstration outside the residence of the British Prime Minister to express their indignation and anger at the British Government's decision to sign an agreement of Strategic Partnership with Turkey.

In a letter conveyed to the British Prime Minister, they ask him to clarify his positions on the Cyprus issue.

Images & chanting: Turkish troops out of Cyprus. Placards: Gordon Brown Forget Cyprus - Forget Votes; Prime Minister do not relinquish Human Rights; Greek Cypriot refugees demand their homes back; Brown please help us end the Turkish occupation.

With their demonstration outside the Prime Ministerial residence and the letter to the British Prime Minister the Cypriot community took a series of measures as a reaction to the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Britain and Turkey. Cypriot students at Universities in London and beyond provided their active support.

Student makes statement to camera: We are here today to express our indignation at the agreement which was recently signed by the British and Turkish Governments. We want to show the British Government that this kind of agreement will not pass by without being challenged and that we are opposed to efforts which seek to establish illegal situations on our island and we will always demonstrate against them.

The demonstration was organised by the British Federation of Cypriot Organisations which sent a letter to the British Prime Minister asking him to reiterate Britain's support for a Cyprus solution based on international law, and reiterate that the British Government will strive for a reunited Cyprus with no Turkish army of occupation and to state that Britain supports implementation of the 8th July Gambari Agreement.

Peter Droussiotis (President of Federation of Cypriot Organisations in Britain) statement to camera: As British citizens we feel great dissapointment that Britain, as a guarantor power of the independence, territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Cyprus not only does not support these significant positions but instead tries in every way to promote the Turkish positions on the Cyprus issue.

Reimen Mpoil statement to camera - (German MEP): For me, as a European citizen, its a very strange declaration because a member state of the European Union is dealing with the special problems of Cyprus, talking with a third country which is asking for membership now. They should respect more the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

The initiatives by the National Federation will continue with meetings with British Officials.

Placards shown: Freedom and Justice for Cyprus; Europe end Turkish occupation now; Turkey is guilty of Genocide in Cyprus, Kurdistan, Armenia and Turkey.

  • The 76% vote against the Annan Plan in 2004 was rejection of an agreement by a UN Secretary General who proposed a solution which was in many ways contrary to fundamental principles and articles of the UN Charter itself, and many of its resolutions on Cyprus. It certainly was not a vote for partition, much though the Turkish side wants to present it as suchm but it was designed to decriminalise Turkey's invasion rather than solve Cypriots' problems.

  • He says he is a British citizen and he objects to our government, then go back to Cyprus and fight the fight there, not that Cyprus republic would last that long if (not going to happen) the Turks did invade again, forget it you have the best half of Cyprus enjoy what you have..nothing is going to change.

  • The International Law is a JOKE! look at Israel crimes and no one gives a shit!

  • THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!

  • With a bit less of THAT kind of "support" the Cyprus problem may not have existed. Britain's non-involvement when Turkey invaded Cyprus was an abrogation of its duties as a guarantor of the sovereignty of Cyprus (even if the law lords found a way of redefining what guarantorship meant) ... and in '74 Britain allowed the transfer of populations into separate zones by ship from its sovereign bases, thus aiding and abetting Turkey's actions in Cyprus. The ignorant speak of 'never got involved'.

  • No the UK supports Turkey, Greece and Cyprus. We have great relations with all 3 countries.

Which is why we never got involved when Turkey asked for support when they invaded Cyprus.

  • Thanks for your comment. He's been blocked because although I appreciate Gine012 having tried to 'reason' with him, I see no reason why we need put up with any more of what TurkicTr thinks or doesn't know (unfortunately most comments from Turkish sources are either plain insults or perversion of both history and truth and do not substantively contribute, other than to illustrate the idiocy of the person posting -- usually from an 'empty' ID on youtube, which I nearly always block and delete)

  • i really thanks for this video i was looking for this video..!!!!what program do you use to edit these videos my friend ?

  • Turkish troops out of Cyprus!

  • this man (turictr) is an idiot. he is a very ignorant faggot man that probably has no friends. this of course is coming from an american cypriot.

  • the north region of Cyprus is occupied by turks. since 1974 There have been over 140,000 turkish settlers and 40,000 turkish soldiers moved in in violation of international law and the Geneva convention. Violation of this provision of the geneva convention is considered a war crime! This occupied land is not recognized by any country other than turkey (those who invaded the island). remove Turkish settlers and Turkish troops from Cyprus.
