A compilation of videos and photos of my trip from Vienna to North Korea by train 2008. Together with a friend we crossed into North Korea from Russia at the Khasan/Tumangang railway border crossing point, which wasn't used by Western tourists since the mid-90ies.
For more information about this trip visit my website http://vienna-pyongyang.blogspot.com/.

Part 1 is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pA3jRC0uSc

(photos of the border bridge and the Korean border officials are not mine)

  • I'd love to know which song you put on this video, especially around 5:11 its really catchy!!

  • @daysin1234:

    1. "Arirang" song

    2. DPRK national anthem

    3. Song "Urban girl (goes to get married)" (도시처녀 시집와요)

    4. Song "Look at us"

Songs 1,3,4 are performed by Ri Kyong Suk, a popular singer in North Korea.

You can find song 3+4 in the channel of youtube-user "dprktvradio".

  • could you go shoping in north korea? also did you need a north korean person with you at all times?

  • @BrianJooRocks : guide was with us from our arrival in Pyongyang till our departure from Pyongyang, if we left the hotel. No guide during the train ride.

Shopping: We only saw souvenir and bookshops for tourists.

  • This is a really neat video! What was the name of that performance beginning at 7:14? That must have been really cool to watch in person, I was amazed at the choreography and the sheer number of performers. That, and the scene in the train car of the girl playing music and singing, are my favorite parts. Thanks for posting!

  • @TheTripsCaptain : It's the Arirang performance.

  • utti1980, great video!

—Thank you for sharing your experience in such a very independent way!

  • @pucukbukit now it's forbidden that way (so i've read)

  • there were showers in the train from Moscow

  • Tell us, please, how many days you have to "endure" without taking a full body shower. In those trains that you caught there are not showers.

  • @TheTripsCaptain if you are impressed with a sheer number of performers, watch this: if you are impressed with a sheer number of performers, watch this: youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=fvwp&v=2g31XyMCl9o (not from North Korea...)
