UK children's charity The Esther Benjamins Trust (EBT) has been working to help deaf children and young people in Nepal since 1999. Project work has been conducted at a school for 150 deaf children in Bhairahawa, southwest Nepal. This has included building classrooms and paying educational scholarships. But even with a good education school leavers struggle to find work in a very discriminatory society that considers them to be "lato" ("stupid"). In March 2008 we responded by beginning to train deaf young people in how to make mosaics. The course was led by EBT London staff member Camilla Kinchin and supported by UK volunteer Holly Wheaton. The young people have shown an aptitude that exceeds their able-bodied peers at the EBT arts rehabilitation centre in Kathmandu!
