This audio/video file shows the setup used to pick up New York's WCBS AM 880 station aboard a cruise ship sailing away fro Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas heading south. The video was captured using a Flip Video flash-camcorder. The audio was captured by FM modulating the walkman audio with a C Crane FM Stereo TRansmitter link-coupled by wire to the antenna formed by a earphone plugged into an Iriver T10 FM MP3 recorder. The video and audio clips were independantly downloaded to a laptop where they were merged and title edited and recoded to an mpeg file
It's possible that except for New York City, the signal from the WCBS-AM transmitter traveled entirely over water between the High Island, New York transmitter site (on the extreme western end of Long Island Sound) and the location of the cruise ship.
Salt water is an excellent conduit for AM radio signals.
