History of OS/2 - die Geschichte von OS/2 - Part 1 - 1992 -1996

Because of the upcoming eComstation 2.0 in 2009 (next OS/2 release with support for modern hardware ans so on) here some pictures about the earlier days of this operating system. From the first "only IBM" version 2.0 (before joint venture Microsoft-IBM) up to the last IBM major release OS/2 Warp 4 in 1996 aka OS/2 Merlin. More with Part 2 about eComstation. Low quality. In diesem Jahr 2009 soll nun die neue eComstation version 2.0 mit Unterstützung neuer Hardware usw. ausgeliefert werden. Hierzu habe ich einen kleinen Streifzug durch die Geschichte des Betriebssystems OS/2 Warp von IBM aufgezeichnet, der ein Bild von den Jahren 1992 (erste IBM Version nach dem Bruch mit Microsoft 2.0) bis 1996, dem letzten "großen" OS/2 Release OS/2 Warp Version 4, Beta Titel war: "OS/2 Merlin" (wegen integrierter Sprachunterstützung) geben soll. Teil 2 behandelt dann den Nachfolger eComstation.

Warp 4 introduced the extremly ugly windows 95 style toolbar, sad day. I prefered the much more flexible original shelf.

@baso88 No they did have a version of OS/2 2.0 Beta under Microsoft's name, it was simply a name just taped over the product, Microsoft did minor changes, IBM did most of the revamp in 2.0. When the Gold version was released, Microsoft did not have version 2.0 on the shelves, I have this copy of the beta under the MICROSOFT.

@nextstep333 released beta was Microsoft OS/2 v1.1. OS/2 v2.0 and v2.1 was made by IBM. Microsoft was working on OS/2 v3.0 (not OS/2 Warp 3.0) and later based Windows NT 3.1 on this technology!

I still have OS/2 3.0 on floppies, but they may not work. I have a copy of version 4.0 along with other software which I got from IBM. Both versions was tricky when it came to installing it on computers. When eCS 1.0 came out I found that it was easier to install and worked much better. If IBM had made OS/2 this good to begin with they could have overtaken Windows years ago.
