These video snipps were taken in May 2008 on the layout of my dad, Joe Schauer. He has a huge American Flyer / S gauge layout, but also dabbles in HO and Lionel and some G scale too.

The first table models Stone Creek and St. Charles, Va. You may notice the Stone Face Rock!

  • Really cool layout - I wish you were my neighbor so I could run over and operate some of my Flyer locomotives at your place. What was that tan colored steam locomotive pulling the 2 passenger cars? Was it something you custom modified? It looks like an Atlantic you painted and modified the smoke stack.

  • @MartyInLa Dad says: It is a gold colored set I bought through the mail 30 years ago. It is an Atlantic and I made the old-timey stack out of a funnel they use at the doctors office to check your ears. The cars are from the Franklin series and I have another car that goes with it. I put contact wheels on them so they would light up. It is a really good engine and a real smoker. modelrailroadman@yahoo.com

  • Wonderful. What type of smoke do you use and how many drops do you put in at a time... very nice. My AF trains make the same great sounds from the baffle, but mine ain't smokin' as much!

  • @Dave121299 My dad says: I use lamp oil the kind you get at Dollar General. I think they still have it. Used to be $1 a quart. You can put in a good amount to make sure the wick is covered.

I have about 15 smokers and some do real good and some are weak. They have a repair kit for them that is a new wick that you wrap around the main wire. I have heard you can use angel hair if you can find it.

  • thats cool

  • I have a 303 Atlantic I used to run more than any other locomotive when I was a kid. That train sat in my mom's basement for about 40 years. I started playing with it again last year. It ran and smoked right away with no issues. I have more expensive locomotives, but I still find myself using the 303 more than anything else because it smokes, it choo-choos, and it can negotiate tight turns better than my diesels and Pacifics can. Will have to pick up a Franklin set someday, they are cool!

  • I have that same Atlantic Locomotive. Its runs always under my Christmas Tree.

  • epic they go FAST! i hope my works like that when i get it working :P
