  • Very good! Domingo is terrific here!

  • I saw this live at the MET, and listened to the Carreras video. I do prefer the voice of the pre-sickness Carreras, yet who but Domingo could convey such emotion through his voice(you have to see the entire opera to appreciate this)? The MET is going to revive this, but really, who can equal this performance? I also think this is some of Verdi's greatest nusic from the 1850's -- pre Rigoletto, Travita and Trovatore. Unfortunately because of subject matter it has been grossly overlooked.

  • I just recently watched this entire Met telecast performance on video. Domingo is an incredible vocal phenomenon! that said, I found his singing (as I quite often do) to be monochromatic, never any repose or contemplative singing in this very complex role. The music certainly allows for that, yet the drama here is always at its summit, its extreme. You never have that issue with Carreras; at all costs he searches out and conveys a great spectrum of the human character.

  • Carreras better actor than Domingo? Oh, c'mon, not true at all! If you have never seen Placido performe, I can tell you... he's one one of best actors ever perfomed in opera.... As for singing, Carreras is very very good as Stifelio!

  • I just saw the DVD of this and am wishing someone uploaded the whole thing on youtube. Domingo is just wonderful in it, I've seen the one with Carreras before and he hams it up something major (watch him 'faint').

As for their voices, on the one hand I'm willing to give props to Carreras for taking on this hard role at a time when he already pretty much didn't have a voice, but frankly he probably shouldn't have.

  • I actually agree with you. Vocally speaking, in terms of power, beauty Carreras had a brilliant vocal instrument, I have only need to add that neither Jose nor Placido had good roles choise. Carreras sung heavy roles as Il trovatore, Turandot, Aida too early in his career and Domingo sung too many lyric roles so that pays off later on. Its only from a vocal longetivy point of view.

  • Love sweet in this....her voice just carries over the rest....Love it!

  • I saw this back in the 90's when I was only just getting an appetite for opera, how wonderful to see once again!

  • Well, I shall have to get tix because again, I really think she is wonderful and if she hadn't for whatever reasons would have been a great Verdi Leonora, Aida, etc.

  • She's my voice teacher at the moment and her voice is definitely intact. Ms. Sweet does perform, but for only select roles. She's performing Verdi's Requiem this April at Avery Fisher. I love her to death!
