in my area the testcard was on then it cut to "Curriculm Bites", then back to testcard for a few seconds then back to Curriculm Bites!

What are these RBS Tests for?

They check to make sure that all the transmitters across the country are able to switch to re-broadcasting the signal of the nearest transmitter in case their main feed goes down.

I take it you were caught out by surprise at the beginning like I was, when you expected it to start at 02:30 but it came on at 02:10 & did not set the recorder before.

Yeah, didn't hear the announcement as I had the volume down, expecting the test to be a bit later :/ Ah well. Lucky I didn't rely on my VCR to tape it, as I'd got the BBC1 and BBC2 times the wrong way round, and I'd have missed most of each test.
