Released in the early 1990's back when AT&T (the original one) invested or partnered in many mobile technologies including Apple's infamous Newton, a startup company called EO, offspring of another called Go, General Magic, and Be Inc, and on and on. Lot's of money coming from lots of different, and sometimes competing divisions within AT&T. No grand well thought out strategy other than the archaic "sell dial tone" mantra from the top. So of course, it became a big mess. However, like star trek, I think AT&T's mighty views of the future inspired (remember the picture phones they sponsored at Disneyland?), and even more, their mighty checkbook helped kids play and experiment, get greedy VCs to want to play too. But I think it led to many great things today (another story), and a fact, this was the birth of what is known today as smart phones.
