Lyrics
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday 'Cause you're evil And you lie And if you should die I may feel slightly sad (But I won't cry)
Loved and lost And some may say When usually it's Nothing Surely you're happy It should be this way ? I say "No, I'm gonna kill my dog" And : "May the lines sag, may the lines sag heavy and deep tonight"
I said "No" And then I shot myself So, drink, drink, drink And be ill tonight
From the one you left behind From the one you left behind From the one you left behind From the one you left behind Behind Behind Behind Behind Behind Behind Oh, unhappy birthday Behind Behind Behind

"Strangeways, Here We Come" could have been a much stronger and concise album. Still, it was a very good one, but not the best at the time. For all the reasons we already know (the group was falling apart, etc).
In my modest opinion, the songs "Unhappy Birthday" and "Death At One's Elbow" are the weakest ones in the album. They should have never been included in this last album. I read Morrissey saying, years later of the "Strangeways..." release, something like this. Even hough he did not refer to this two songs in particularly.
This two songs rank only as average B sides for a Smiths single, compared with the high quality of almost all of the other B sides. Although the lyrics are really nice, the songs are not that interesting, not for a Smiths album at least. This only reveals the top quality craft of The Smiths albums.
