I set up my Bluebird Boxes for this season! With New Defenses. The BB's have come back already in March, I'm looking forwards to the TRES. *READ INFO BELOW*

"Without question the most deplorable event in the history of American ornithology was the introduction of the English Sparrow." -W.L. Dawson, The Birds of Ohio, 1903

The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is sometimes referred to as the English sparrow. HOSP are not native to the U.S. They were deliberately introduced in multiple locations in the late 1800's, and are now established throughout the lower 48 states.http://www.sialis.org/hosp.htm

Adult HOSP, nests, eggs and young may be destroyed under federal law. Humanely euthanize trapped birds.

  • great information! We control HOSP with a spooker and a sparrow trap. We have seen a significant decline in HOSP and an increase Bluebirds fledging.

  • @Spyonabird Good! Im sooo glad some people are doing the right thing. I have a new system for 2012. Sparrow Spookers, fishing line, Mylar. But the best will be the HOSP trap! Right on! I did not get any TRES this year. So ready for nxt season. Too many people do not know the dangers with HOSPs and they can be killed legally..and should be! Soon they will migrate...there's been an explosion of 20 here. Kill The Sparrow.

  • Very interesting defences against the HOSPs...Very informative vid...Luckily I have none out my way...but I also don't have any swallows and rarely see the bluebird...

  • @seahue Good and humm not so good.;) I had to take down the BB box with mealworms on top..dam HOSP, about 15 showed up! Now, if those bastards come around when i have the TRES..I putting out a trap. But they have not been able to land at the other at all...good sign. That one has all the defenses.

  • This is a very informative video. Fortunately I have only the Mourning Dove which are not a problem because the Sharp-shinned take care of those.

  • @temp24Lno5 And that is cool! :) The Coopers I have on video, very similar to that one. Though I like Doves too....just the HOSP I hate! I counted 7 of them here...going to do something about them, not only my new defenses...but will wait to see if the BB's or TRES take over any box. Then...those little bastards are gone! ;)
