  • This sounds so authentic, as though The Band were just updating a song that was originally a ballad written shortly after the Civil War. Powerful.

  • when I typed in "The Band" the top suggestions was "the band perry". fuck that

  • @leelee90210 The Last Waltz. The Band's farewell concert to touring etc.

  • Does anyone know what concert is this? I know Joni joins them and so does Neil Young...is a cd available of this?

  • @eeldergill Exactly! It's such a powerful song. I've recently gotten into the Civil War and I'm reading about it. The song is so authentic and powerful. It gives me goosebumps. Hard to believe that it was written by someone as detached from the events as a Canadian.

  • @wolfeel54

the one who wrote was the guy from Arkansas, I believe. I can't remember which one he is though.

  • Powerful.

  • This is I believe one of the greatest songs from that era - I can't believe that a Canadian band could sing a song so well that refers to a time from the American South - maybe they have some connection to it?

  • If you were lucky enough to see THE BAND this is damn near as close as it gets

  • The Joan Baez version is good but personally i think the male voice of this version suits the song better.
