A full-day, stem cell drive was held at Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday, June 11, in an effort to add more Persian registrants to Canada's national network and in the hopes of saving one particular North American Persian patient in need, Mona Zarei.
Originally from Iran, Mona, 26, moved to Florida in 2007 to pursue a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Florida International University. Only a few short months later Mona was diagnosed with two rare and debilitating blood
disorders, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and aplastic
anemia, in which her bone marrow stopped functioning.
While Mona has been receiving regular blood transfusions, she is now in desperate need of a lifesaving stem cell donation from within her Persian community. To date, no match has been found.
