Volvox is a genus of chlorophytes, a type of green algae. It forms spherical colonies of up to 50,000 cells. They live in a variety of freshwater habitats, and were first reported by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in 1700. Volvox developed its colonial lifestyle 200 million years ago.

  • If i had access to the resources i would love to do a video of volvox budding off its young. it would take a long time lapse and a really powerful dissecting mic.

  • You might think this is 1 giant cell but actually your looking at thousands of cells in a ball. It's called an adult colony, the smaller ones are called daughter colonies.

  • weird im about to see them in class in a few min right now I am writing facts.=p

  • @Skyplue123 once we develop shrink ray technology, you can do that :D

  • i just want to get into that ball and jump around in it for eva, or 3 hours

  • wwwoooooww se ve genial esa alga !! me encantó!!

  • Where is the eyespot on it? Are they on the smaller single cells or what?

  • This is like the world's BESTEST video. Have you people seen videos of the Ciliophores? They are really cool! But VOLVOX IS THE BESTEST!
