I can't quite figure out what was going on at the Down Chemical plant in West Baton Rouge Parish after Gustav moved through Monday. Wasn't sure if it was a problem or emergency burn off. Any answers out there?

  • The last comment is senseless drivel..

  • These are 2 flares burning hydrocarbons. I know because I work at one of the ethylene plants. There are 2 ethylene plants at this site. Due to an electrical outage because of Gustav there was no steam generated to make the flares burn in a more optimum manner. The high winds make the flame and smoke look more worse than they actually are. If 17 bar steam were available the smoking would be at a very minimum. All of these other posts are full of shit.

  • That is the Acetylene unit burning off waste gas, It is much easier to burn the gas than to shut the unit totally down, not a problem.

  • if it were in China it would be considered normal.

  • if it were in China it would considered normal.

  • thats nt an explosion.....it is just an abnormality in plant such as excess pressure which is release by RUPTURE DISC or by EMERGENCY SAFETY VALVE or LETDOWN VALVE to the FLARE SYSTEM (CHIMNEYS) for safely releasing the pressure from d system for protecting d vital areas of the plant.

as u may c d flare wic is done thro ELEVATED HIGH PRESSURE FLARING chimneys.

  • @MichaelHeida

    your so full of shit.

  • that is both the flares, the reason it looks like a big fire in the unit is the wind is blowing it at 75mph...hence HURRICANE

  • I'm willing to bet they NEVER told you what it was.

  • I'm not saying that this case wasn't incidental, but at Dow chemical, Midland, Michigan they have an "Accidental" Chemical release almost every night...
