This is a custom electric bicycle I built entirely myself. I ordered most of the parts from the internet, and some from local industrial vendors in my hometown. I only completed it last weekend, and haven't had a chance to do a range analysis without an mid-trip charge yet, but I estimate its range (without pedal assistance) to be from 12-15 miles on flat terrain. It gets me through town fairly quickly, and even gets me to work in the same amount of time that it took me by car! Only now I'm not paying for the gas and parking!

Here are some of the specs on the bike, because I know some of the other people out there don't general put a lot of detail about their bikes in the descriptions: 900W Currie motor, 40 amp currie controller, 24 volt system. I am using 2 18ah SLA (lead acid) batteries in series. I have an amperage meter that gives me indication of how much power I'm using. It uses an FFS system so that I can shift gears and get higher top speeds. The project cost, including a used bike with needed improvements, was around $700-750. I still have things to add, such as a solid battery box and a 'dashboard'.

Let me know if you have more questions. HI-V stands for "Hydrocarbon Independent Vehicle".

  • @nybrave08 Hey sorry I took so long to get back to you guys...I've not monitored this account for some time. Not pedaling, I achieved 20mph cruising speed and probably a 22mph max on a flat without headwind.

The gear ratio... two stage. 11tooth to 80, then from 14 to a 44, and the inner crank chainring is 30...which drives the bike's freewheel and thats a megarange 8 speed. I would have to do the math again to determine the total reduction...can't remember off the top of my head.

  • is that with you pedaling or all motor?

  • I just happen to have the same motor controller and happen to have a pair of 18ah batteries. Do you have a top speed stat, and the gear ratio for that stat? thanks, by the way the bike looks like it runs beautifully
