  • number1: Do your homework, he loved Joe Louis and when Louis was broke he sent Louis money. Max loved all athletes and respected white and black.

  • That's right. Famous black fighters like Archie Moore, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson have admired Schmeling and the other way round. And Max and Jesse Owens liked each other too.

  • Max paid for funeral by telogramming Jewish boy he had saved during the war that had become a hotel owner in America. Max asked him to stump up the cost of the funeral and to re-imbuirse him shorly after. News of Max paying for the funeral and saving the live of this Jewish man and his brother only came out when it became known just how Max had paid for the funeral. Those were just two of the many lives Max saved. He was quite the man. World Champion, businessman, humanitarian. RIP.

  • @dheschete what happened in the first one??? Lucky right??? Knocking his ass all over the ring and finally putting him out of his misery in the 12th....

  • @burtwiseman

He was also a pallbearer at Joe's funeral, if I'm not mistaken.

  • @burtwiseman Yes...Max was a man of love and also very wealthy...and generous

  • @burtwiseman thats true he respected louis and most all he fought

  • i am related to young stribling... just felt like putting that in there ha

  • Yes I agree, these days the boxeers management would have checked with the revenue first to see if tax was payable and if so then payed it first before donating the rest to the charity. But lots of fighters seem to have bad advisers, even now

  • Yes, it was a shame. Had the IRS had a conscience they would have written the debt off shortly after Joe retired. Joe's advisors should also be ashamed of their actions.

  • Thanks for that soup dragon. I always thought the way Louis was treated was a disgrace (I'm Pendlemania . I had to change my profile)

  • Max and Joe were friends - but only well after their ring carreers. Max visited Joe at some point maybe 5 or 10 years after Joe had both left the ring. When Max arrived, Joe was on the golf course. He waited 2 or 3 hours for Joe to come back. When oe returned his wife greeted him at the door and said Max Schmelling was waiting for him. Joe dropped his clubs. The two became friends, and as others have pointed out, Max tried to help Joe through the hard times and would pay for his funeral.
