apparently asuka is jesus in disguise cuz ummm no human would be able to survive dying like 3 fucking times as brutal as she died too (hasnt watched the series but ive seen enough clips and talk to a few fans[legit die hards] and yea asuka just doesnt want to die literally) i bet u she has a bargain with death tht or death knows asuka may own him and avoids her soul....

It's actually stated flat-out in the series that that's "not armor," but rather restrictors. I want to say they also refer to it as armor at times, though.
It's probably a little of column A, a little of column B. Considering how the restrict-their-strength angle was emphasized, I tend to think that's the main purpose.

@DSFARGEG00 i didnt know that about the armor, i always thought it was an insurance polocy, incase the eva got all pissy the armor locked up without power so they couldnt move... your probably right though x) does it say in the series somewhere so i can have everything right?

Evas aren't robots. They're lobotomized clones of horrible Cthulhu-esque aliens with enough hardware shoved in to allow them to be piloted as a weapon.
The "armor" that you see's main purpose is actually to keep the Evas from physically tearing themselves apart with their own strength.
