More at http://cenm.ag/unemployed. New unemployment numbers for chemists released by the American Chemical Society in March 2012 are the worst in 40 years, with new graduates and postdocs hit hardest. At the ACS National Meeting in San Diego, young chemists respond to the news.

Let me guess China and India are graduating thousands of chemists and they are willing to work for nothing.

Weird in the uk science degrees are pretty good compared to most other degrees that don't lead to a direct job. Chemistry is one of the better degrees due it being scientific and quantitative meaning you can work in finance, do a conversion to law or academic job. I mean the transferable skills are better than say biology/history or English

Getting my BS in chemistry this year. Applied to 6 graduate schools and have only heard back from one (rejected)! Its april now! Most schools should have already sent admissions out! Funding problems i suppose. Now the job market looks bleak too... Not good!

Most of the Chimests I graduated with either left the field completely or settled for teaching. The only thing waiting for science grad in the USA is unemployment of horrible dead-end temp jobs for $15 an hour.
