I was caught in an afternoon thunder lightning storm while on a boat. It was not fun. Lots of lightning big waves and wind.

I did not want to be in the storm but sometimes Sh@t! happens. The storm was heading my way and it was getting dark. So it was either try to go through it in day light or go through it at night.

I put my rods down to the floor board and decided to go for it. I could only run safely at about 12 mph due to the winds and waves even in a 22' bay boat.

In hind sight I should have put on my life jacket.

Hope to not have to deal with something like this again that's for sure.

Best part besides me being alive is that I tested the Kodak Playsport pretty nicely against wind, rain, and saltwater sprays.

Boat I was in and self draining hull so when water gets in, it goes right out, thank god.

  • Hey...AWESOME video! What setting did you use for the camera? 720p at 60fps or 1080p at 30fps? Be safe!

  • @evans5150

720p 30fps .. not bad for a point and shoot in the rain.

  • Ha! Great video... in all the times I was out on the kayak in the middle of Tampa bay or down Sarasota way, wherever, I was never caught in a storm like that. Lightning in Tampa is no joke... How many times you had lightning hit within 100m of you in Tampa? Me? About 5 over 10 years. Couple times within 20m. Lightning capital of the world bro. Stay safe!

I didn't want to be stuck out there believe me.. it was just one of circumstances where there wasn't a way out besides running through it. I guess I could have beached the boat and call a cab or someone to pick me up. :)

  • wowza...

  • @maxpacemph

Yeah it was quite scary.. It was getting dark, I was alone, the storm was heading my way regardless. I Weighted my options to stay and deal with it at night or try to cross it and deal with it with some day light. I pick the later.

  • Another reason I don't fish. Lol. Why didn't you head back as soon as you saw the storm ?

I often get into storms and I'm always afraid of getting struck by lightning.

The next time I'm on sea and getting caught in a storm I'm going to do as you told.

Finally I can give a fuck about lightning, thanks man.

  • To avoid getting struck by lightning hold your fishing rod straight up in the air

  • id be getting the %^#* outta there. FAST

  • I would of sh*t my pants.
