umm no.. he zoomed into the object.. then adjusted the focus that is why the movement is so abrupt

The only reason why the DOF is so visible, is due to the camera being so close to the objects.

The camera was about 10ft from the subject. This was achieved by using a medium tight shot with the zoom and adjusting the focus manually. I have also found that using the back focus to be effective.
