During parliamentary debates, Dr Tan (Cheng Bock) was known for speaking his mind, particularly on the debate over nominated MP (member of parliament).
''My own feelings on this fundamental democractic principle, of only having elected members of parliament in this house, is too strong to be compromised. I can not support this motion.'' - Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Singapore Parliament Session (29 May 1992)
Despite the party whip in place, Dr Tan (Cheng Bock) voted against the NMP scheme, on grounds that political office holders should earn their mandate from the people, a principle he holds dear till today.
Note:
Mr Low Thia Khiang of the Workers' Party (WP) & Mr Cham See Tong of the Singapore Democatic Party (SDP) can be seen clapping to show support of Dr Tan Cheng Bock's speech.
After the Singapore General Election 1991, the parliament looked like this:
Peoples' Action Party (PAP) - 77 seats
Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) - 3 seats
Workers' Party (WP) - 1 seat
