Not literally. The number 4 means 4. It's pronounced si. The word for death is pronounced si or tsi, depending on which version on pinyin you want to go with.
The two words sound very similar, but not exactly the same. So in Chinese culture, the number 4 is associate with death. It's typical for hotels in China to not have a 4th floor. Just like American hotels don't have a 13th floor.

Heheh, thanks! I do volunteer reading to kids and I try to add a bit of Chinese in on the side. Kids tend to find the different sounds and character/pictures interesting. It's loads of fun!
