I got a Galileoscope the other day and though it'd be fun to attach an old web cam from my bin of obsolete computer junk to it.

There's more information about the Galileoscope here:
https://www.galileoscope.org

If anyone could recommend a good inexpensive web cam that allows manual control of the exposure/brightness/contrast and has a decent resolution I'd love to hear about it. because this one is baaaaad.

  • I have a question: I remove the lens of the webcam and leave only the chip exposed, then I put the webcam in the place of the eyepiece. So, just like that? I thopught I could place it on the different eyepieces and that would allow me watching the Moon (for instance) at different magnification levels. My telescope is 75x900

  • I'm not the best person to ask this as I don't know that much about optics but as I understand it If you remove the lens from the web cam the telescope produces its image right on the imaging chip. No eyepiece is needed. If you want to use an eyepiece then your web cam also needs a lens in much the same way as your eye uses its lens to produce an image on the retina

  • Have ordered 2 telescopes, and im using your instructions to use my old webcam to make your setup ready for the telescope. Was easy just screw the lens off diddnt even need to open it. Thanks for the video, i`ll post video response if i get it to work.. :D

  • good luck. I'll look forward to seeing that.

  • Great vid - I have been trying the exact(?) same thing, but cannot seem to get anything in focus. Could you please let me know the configuration of the telescope?

  • There's really very little to it. The web cam has had its lens removed and there's not eyepiece on the telescope. Just position the imaging chip at the end of the telescope and you should be good to go. I found with the galileoscope that the focal point was pretty close to the end of the scope with the focusing barrel about all but 5mm all the way in.

  • Awesome!

  • how much is it

  • Very nice work. Just from an aesthetic point of view, the clouds comming in and obscuring the moon was very mysterious and cool looking.
