This is a 'trailer" promoting the fourth annual All-day singing from both the Sacred Harp and Ingalls Christian Harmony in Newbury VT, the town where Ingalls lived, taught, and composed on Saturday July 19th, 2008.

Newbury's own Jeremiah Ingalls is an important writer of fasola music, not only for his fuging tunes like New Jerusalem, and Northfield, but for his early folk hymns and spirituals many of which are the earliest (1805) notated versions of melodies that would persist through the campmeeting tradition and appear in variant harmonizations in southern and western tunebooks like Kentucky Harmony, Missouri Harmony, Southern Harmony, and The Sacred Harp.

These include tunes like Gospel Trumpet, Clamanda, Vernon, 93rd Psalm, and The Young Convert just to name a few.

So if you are interested in shape-note singing of the history of spirituals and American folk-hymnody come and sing with us on July 19th 2008 in beautiful Newbury Vermont.

  • GO NEWBURY!!!!!!!!!!! NEWBURY ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the church is right next to th elementary school............. nd i think tht pic of the whole town was taken from tht little building up on mt. pulaski or sumthin.......... NEWBURY IS THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE!!!!!!!!

  • The tune is J. Ingalls PENNSYLVANIA, printed in Christian Harmony 2005 and Northern Harmony. Not to be confused with Nehemiah Shumway's tune of the same name appearing in the Norumbega Harmony.

  • This is a first class 'trailer'. Wish I could be there; Vermont is beautiful!

  • Impressive! You have sure made me want to come! If only I could afford it.

  • Very good! What is the name of the tune? Which tunebook is it from?

  • Very cleverly done! It should attract a lot of singers!
