Sherramuir Fight sung by the Corries

Song about the indecisive battle of the 1715 Jacobite Uprising. Both sides partially routed the other, so 'German Geordie' held onto the throne.

The redcoats uniforms in some of the pics look more like from Culloden 31 years later. The bayonets then were plug bayonets which meant you couldn't fire the musket at the same time as having the bayonet fixed; by Culloden the socket bayonet had been invented.

Though to be fair it wsan't that undecisive. The Jacobite forces vastly outnumbered the govt forces but they were stopped in their tracks from breaking into the southern part of Scotland. The govt forces didn't need to wipe them out - only stop them!

Agreed. There's a difference between what happens tactically on a battlefield and the overall strategic outcome. In terms of a contest of arms, neither side could claim an outright victory, but the strategic result, i.e. the unwillingness of the Jacobites to come out of their corner again, favoured the government side

@gaconnochie Poor leadership on the day by The Earl of Mar was the trouble here, but to be honest he was not an expert soldier and had his limitations. It was his failure to return to the field the next day however, that led to the confusion about who was the victor. You can only imagine the scale of the victory had Dundee been at the head of th Jacobite forces. History is full of what if's however

@whyteay he video is good and as a person who is often in Sherrifmuir myself its a much appreciated effort. Its not easy to get period images to make the videos like this. The photo's are also good but the guys in Jacobite clothing probably have made them theirselves or had it made at a high cost. Its a tribute that people try hard to respect and honour our Scottish history so well done to them, and also to people who make vids like this.

@brawladdie1 ..and so far as I know at Killiecrankie the Government forces didn't even get time to fix the bayonets before the Highland charge was on them!
