Leftover lead drain pipe from rehabbing gets re-cast for my Metals Museum. Take a warm March afternoon, a salvaged 1800's lead drain pipe, tin snips, a Teflon pot, a scavenged hot plate, a plaster and tile mold, and a dump bucket full of water, and away we go.

Most lead pipe is made from an alloy called chemical lead, which contains 0.05 percent copper and the balance pure lead. The single peculiarity of lead pipe results from the fact it is extruded, not cast. When a lead alloy is extruded, it work softens, sometimes substantially, giving the impression that the material is somewhat softer than it really is.

how soft is the lead from pipes? can you scratch it with your thumbnail? i am thinking about searching for some and making bullets out of it! that would be fun! if you want a really nice mold for ingots i recommend getting a Lyman mold, i have one and it casts good 1 LB ingots!
