~THE SWALLOW SONG ~ written by Richard Farina & Sung by Joan and Mimi Baez.

Joan says:

"At the time of Richard Farina`s untimely death in April 1966 (at age 29) he was producing what could have been 25-year old Joan`s first electric folk-rock album, which she ultimately shelved. Only three song from those sessions have ever surfaced over the years, in various collections: "Swallow Song" was a remake of a tume from Richard & Mimi`s second LP, "Reflections in a Crystal Wind". Three decades later, it sounded better than ever here, with Mimi`s magnificent guitar playing on display. "Mimi was a superlative guitar player, aiming for, achieving , and perfecting runnings, styles and gyrations which to this day leave me in awe. Siblings harmony, born of invisible bonds, love and genius, is like no other."

  • I was out walking with my dog around the local castle this morning and watched a flock of housemartins (cousins of the swallows and very alike) hunting for insects on the wind in preparation for their journey South (West Africa I think.)

It's something they do every year around this time. Very beautiful but also a little sad - just like this song.

  • This Song is originally a Song from the Sefardic Jews 15. Century and calls "los biblicos" and is NOT written by Richard Farina.

  • The European barn swallow (Hirundo Rusticus) migrates from Europe each Sept/Oct to South Africa to escape our cold Northern winters. They return to us from as early as March, although usually, early May here in the far north. They live on flies, and their greatest challenge on their way to and from Europe is the ever expanding Sahara dessert, where many can die of hunger and exhaustion, but most so far survive to herald the summer for us, brave little birds, please encourage them to nest :-).

  • just to make it clear, my thumb went down for getty images. thumb up for the sisters baez .

  • Mimi died of cancer in 2001,she was a superb singer too.
