This extract from Vaughan Williams Tallis Fantasia is taken from Beulah 1PD26 Collins Conducts British Music.

It is available in all good record stores or direct from Beulah at www.eavb.co.uk

It is also available as a download from iTunes

John France at Music Web International writes:
Firstly, the programme of this CD is a near perfect introduction to the pleasures of British music - counting Grainger as an honorary countryman - and secondly, the performance of some of these works is eye-opening to say the least. I listened to Collins' version of the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis twice for this review. There is definitely something magical and moving here that I have not quite heard before in this work. And this is even allowing for the half-century plus years that have passed since it was first recorded. Perhaps it is this version that best explains to me what so impressed the young Herbert Howells all those years ago at the Three Choirs Festival. It is like a paean of praise for, and a meditation on, the soil of the West Country and it sons."

Robert Cowen writes in Gramophone for December 2008: "or me Beulah's star release has Anthony Collins conduct a programme of "British" music. Rarely have I encountered a more sensitively nuanced reading of Vaughan Williams Tallis Fantasia, with some beautifully judged perspectives "

  • This was my fathers favorite composer. I can see why. Vaughn Williams music certainly brings visions of English countryside, which is where we are from. When my dad was dieing of certain complications , we played this piece for him in his hospital room. What a royal send-off. God bless him and Vaughn Williams for such great music contributions.

  • This music stirs your very soul it has such power and depth, if this doesnt stir your emotions then nothing will. Absolute genius

  • The English are not given to jumping up and down about being English. We just get on with life etc. But this is special.

  • The video - there was a video of this and Greensleves with much more film from 1950's - what happened to it?

The 195o's fillm was so appropriate

  • lifts the soul,, from the county of saints , siners, pitmen and poets,,, Durham gods country,, this is a wondeful work and so uplifting it always reminds me of home and hardship suffered by our great County

  • I find this the most sublime piece of music and so typically English. Williams and Elgar seem like blood brothers. So enjoyable. I have just heard this played in Peterborough Cathedral and it always lifts my soul. Thank you.

  • @TK42138: Quite right. I was a music student in college, and I was familiar with some band music he wrote, which is NOTHING compared to his orchestral work. This song alone gave me hope in truly dark moments. Glad to see I wasn't alone.

  • Absolutely magnificent.

  • thank you so much

  • just amazing, try and get hold of malcom sargent conducting, circa 1950ish

  • Just read your comments and I'm now wiping my eyes.

Listening to Vaughn Williams' music got me through some rough times as well.

  • Totally agree.
