DARPA held a competition for street-legal robots to drive autonomously for 60 miles in an urban (city) environment. They gave 18 months to prepare and announced the location 3 weeks before the teams performed final qualifiers. Over 80 teams applied. 35 were chosen to qualify. 11 teams competed against each other. This video was made the week before the race. Clark of Tartan Racing asked friends on other teams to contribute pictures. The effort was a "thank you" to DARPA because the effort challenged us but we had fun at the same time. Tartan Racing won the $2 million prize. Stanford placed second ($1M) and Virginia Tech placed third ($500K). All teams had great sponsors. Tartan Racing big ones were GM, CAT, and Continental. Volkswagon sponsored Stanford and Ford & CAT sponsored Virginia Tech. There are many stories. Enjoy!
